Carcinogenic lighting LED?

By Green Gandhi August 29, 2008 Category: Topicality

The site mac macbidouille teaches us that lighting LED is not as green as one will be able to believe it:

The systems of rétroéclairage with cold cathode have two major disadvantages. They consume much energy and require to be manufactured to use mercury and arsenic, two poisons.

When Steve Jobs had announced that Apple was going gradually to give up this technology for the LED even Greenpeace applauded this initiative.

However, if the LED do not call upon these metals, they contain gallium arsenide which California has just classified in the list of potentially carcinogenic materials following a publication of International Agency for Research one Cancer (IARC).

Fortunately, it is not question of risking a Cancer by using Macbook Pro. On the other hand, the precautions to be taken for the people working in the factories producing these LED could be reinforced.
